Title: Dorlas

An interesting summary of a minor but influential character! You bring up things that I hadn't thought of before, like Dorlas's long history of defying Brandir's orders. I like how you trace the different versions, and it was especially interesting to me that Tolkien in his revisions made the repeating patterns in Turin's life and the parallels to Nargothrond even stronger.

Author's Response:

Thank you very much!

I'm so glad you found the bio worth reading and thinking about!

Title: Dorlas

Very thorough examination and comparison, thanks so much for all of the hard work.

Not a happy story--good summary of the guy:

Dorlas ends outmatched in every way by the man he owed allegiance to, whom he underrated, undermined, and insulted--but he has also, by his relentless goading, pushed a wise and gentle man into committing manslaughter.

One of those characters I want to smack! Nothing like a heavy serving of ill-will, ill-fate, malice, and stupidity to cheer a reader up!

Nice work!

Author's Response:

Thank you very much, Oshun, for reading and for your generous comments!

Perhaps I was almost too thorough, for such an unpopular character! But it did strike me, the more I looked into it, that Tolkien had devoted quite a lot of care to how he portrayed him.
