Special Project Announcement: MORE Seven in '07!
As many probably know by now, SWG has declared the month of July in honor of the House of Fëanor. The response to the initial Seven in '07 project was overwhelming, and the results can be found here. However, the House of Fëanor--and its influenced on the Tolkien fan community--goes beyond Fëanor and his seven sons, and we'd be remiss if we ignored Nerdanel and Celebrimbor.
As before, we are seeking short fiction, poems, excerpts of longer fiction and poems, and artwork about Nerdanel and Celebrimbor. Those of you who have sent material about these characters already do not need to send them again (though a gentle reminder to the absentminded webmaster is never a bad thing). Seven in '07 seeks to show the diversity of creative works inspired by the House of Fëanor, and we invite all Tolkien fan-writers and -artists to consider sending in work for inclusion in this project.
Currently, we are seeking the following:
- Short fiction under 200 words about Nerdanel and Celebrimbor.
- Short poems under 20 lines about Nerdanel and Celebrimbor.
- Excerpts of longer works (fiction or poems) about Nerdanel and Celebrimbor. The excerpts should not exceed 200 words.
- Visual art (drawings, paintings, et cetera) focusing on Nerdanel and Celebrimbor. The longest side of the artwork should not exceed 700 pixels.
Additionally, we ask contributors to keep the following in mind:
- We are going to do our best to publish something from every contributor who sends material to us. However, we have to remain practical as well. If we have twenty pieces about Celebrimbor lusting after Galadriel, we will not be able to publish them all. We seek to show a diverse selection of canonical interpretations and writing styles from a variety of authors.
As such, we encourage submissions about the events and characters less-often written about in the Tolkien fan community. We also encourage contributors to send as many pieces as they would like. If you have 100 drabbles about Nerdanel, please feel free to send them all. There is no limit to the number of selections that you may send.
- Seven in '07 is focused primarily on how different authors interpret and write about the existing canon. As such, it is unlikely that we will publish much--if any--alternate universe (AU) material. You are welcome to send AU material for consideration, however and excerpts from longer AU works, especially when the excerpts are not themselves AU.
- SWG welcomes both teenaged (13 or older) and adult members. Seven in '07 is intended for all of our members to enjoy. As such, we will not accept adult-rated work for this compilation. Work that is rated General or Teens according to our Ratings Guide is welcome.
Excerpts from longer, adult-rated pieces are welcome as well, as long as the excerpts are rated General or Teens. However, please indicate if the longer work is adult-rated. This will not influence our selection of pieces to include in the compilation, but we hope to link excerpts to the longer works to which they belong and will need to indicate which of these longer works are not suitable for the entire SWG audience.
- We seek one-time rights to publish your work on the sites affiliated with SWG as part of the Seven in '07 project. This includes our homepage, LiveJournal community, Yahoo! discussion list, and any future groups that are managed by SWG. What this means in plain English is that we want to put your work up on our sites. You are welcome to post and publish your work anywhere else that you would like. The work may already be up on dozens of sites when you send it to us. This is fine; you do not have to take it down. We do not seek exclusivity in any way. The copyright remains yours; the work remains yours. You are simply granting us permission to publish it on our sites, as part of the Seven in '07 project.
However, please keep in mind that this is a pubished compilation, and we will not be editing or changing the compilation once it is finished. If you revise your submission once it is published, you will not be able to self-update to the revised version and we will not be making revisions. Likewise, if you give us one-time rights to publish your work on our site, then we will not take it down except in special circumstances and only if you contact us first.
What this means in plain English is that if your submission is a work-in-progress and you don't want the current, unrevised version lingering on the Web for years to come, then please do not submit it. Likewise, if you like to take stories down from archives as quickly as they go up and expect that you won't be happy being included in this project by this time next week (or next year, or ten years from now), then please do not submit your work.
- You do not need to be a member of SWG to participate in this project. We welcome authors and artists from all over the Web to share their creativity with us.
So what's in it for you? We will link your name to the non-profit website of your choice. If you'd like to get more visitors to your personal homepage, blog or journal, or story archive on another site (or even right here on SWG!), this is a good way to get quick and free publicity. Likewise, if you'd like the title of your piece linked to a longer work or collection from which it comes, we will gladly do so.
The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, 24 July 2007. We will let you know after that which of your submissions we will be including in the compilation, and the compilations will be released on 30 and 31 July 2007.
If you're interested in submitting work to Seven in '07, please email us at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org. Please be sure to include the information listed below.
In sending your submissions, you are agreeing to the terms outlined above and giving the Silmarillion Writers' Guild one-time rights to publish your work on our sites.
Author's Name: Your name exactly as you would like it to appear in the compilation.
Homepage (optional): If you'd like us to link your name to your homepage, please include a full URL.
Story/Poem Title: Again, exactly as you would like it to appear.
Submission is an excerpt? YES or NO
If YES, is the longer work adult-rated? YES or NO
Submission: Please send a URL where we may find your submission or send your work as an attachment. .doc, .txt, .rtf, and .html are acceptable file formats for stories and poems; .jpg, .gif, and .png are acceptable file formats for artwork. You may also paste your work directly into the body of the email, but be mindful that we won't receive text formating (e.g., bold and italics). It is customary to use *asterisks* for bold and _underscores_ for italics; HTML tags are also acceptable. If the submission is an excerpt and you'd like us to link to the longer work, don't forget to send us a URL, even if you send the submission in an email or as an attachment!
As always, please direct any questions you may have to our moderators at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.
