Call for Contributors: Read & Review

Read & Review is an occasional column that reviews books and collections related to Tolkien. Publications eligible for review should generally be less than a year old at the time of writing, though we would consider reviews of older texts in certain circumstances (e.g., a text experiences a resurgence in interest).

Status: Open to new submissions. Please contact us (see below) before beginning an article.

Requirements:

This column reviews books and collections relevant to Tolkien. Because Tolkien studies overlaps with other academic disciplines (e.g., philology, medieval literature, fan studies), we would consider texts that are not directly about Tolkien as long as the connection to Tolkien or Tolkien studies is centered in the review. Texts reviewed for this column should generally have been published within the last year although, again, we would consider older texts in the right circumstances. For example, if a text has experienced a resurgence in relevance due to a popular topic in the Tolkien fandom or Tolkien studies, a review of that text would be appropriate.

The author of the review should, at a minimum, provide readers with a basic summary of the book or collection. Beyond that, the approach taken is up to the author. Reviews can but do not need to be critical in focus. Other considerations might include (but certainly are not limited to) the audience for the book (fans, scholars, new fans?); other content, such as illustrations or a bibliography; the background of the author(s) or editor(s); or the content of some or all of the materials in a collection.
