Fanwork Notes

Created for the Cheesy Corn Chips challenge (as part of New Year's Resolution) - because the song title prompt 'I Will Always Love You' seems appropriate for a poem which pretty much says 'I love you' ten times in fourteen lines! Beleg, of course, is deadly serious.

This isn't really a sonnet, although it owes a lot to the form. But it definitely owes something to Elizabeth Barrett Browning's 'How do I love thee? Let me count the ways' (including the rhyming of breath and death).

When first I saw you, weary from the wild

I loved you as a parent loves a child.

I loved you, though you left without a word

And would not speak the truth that should be heard.

I love your foolish stubbornness and pride

(although King Thingol should not be defied).

I love you even in bad company

I love you when you whisper ‘stay with me’.

I love you as I seek you far and wide

I love you while we're fighting side by side.

When I believe you slain, true pain I know

And as I cut your bonds, I love you so!

I say ‘I love you’ with my final breath

And I still love you, even after death.
