Rosemary for Remembrance

Read Rosemary for Remembrance

Not often did Gilraen receive any letters in Rivendell from her family or friends at home, although unwritten messages passed between them, keeping her abreast of some of their news. These were carried willingly by the Sons of Elrond, while anything committed to writing, it was feared, might be intercepted.

When the anniversary of Arathorn’s death had just passed for the third time, however, she received an unsigned letter in the hand of a friend whose husband had died alongside Arathorn in his last fight. Accompanied by a sprig of flowering rosemary, it contained the following lines:

Remembrance flowers.

Under our feet, memory

shapes a path onward.

Chapter End Notes

For the prompt "remembrance" for Silmarillion Epistolary on Tumblr.

(I had been convinced that rosemary must have been among the plants mentioned as growing in Ithilien, for which I  had made a bingo card for an earlier challenge, but in fact I haven't so far traced any mention of rosemary in the Legendarium at all.)
