Lingering by Flora-lass

Fanwork Notes

I've been wanting to write a poem about StarSpray's Daeron ever since he first appeared in High in the Clean Blue Air - but I heard his voice most clearly in Mezza Voce, and this is the result. Everything in Lingering is StarSpray's, and I'm so grateful for all the beautiful writing which inspired it.

Lingering

Read Lingering

I linger in the mallorn grove, and lament your absence.

I gaze at golden leaves and silver boughs

and remember how they gave you comfort.

I long to sing of these trees with you

and for our harmony on harp and flute

(though it is selfish to wish you here

when you are where you need to be).

How is it that this short time apart

feels longer than six thousand years and more?

While knowing you so well as to miss you so

is such joy as I have never known before;

And one dark dream alone was little enough to bear

If only you may be freed from your nightmares.

(But oh, how I wanted you!)

I want to tell you of our families,

of friendships forged and kind Caranthir's flowers;

of fair Tirion, and King Thingol's court

(and to show off my songbirds)

But my voice seems muffled and half-hearted.

Hurry home, my love, when you are healed.

Meet me among the mallorns

and we will make music once again.
