Grey Summer Garden by Himring
Fanwork Notes
This is a little post-re-embodiment sequel to the rose garden scene in It Seems You Do, which is set in Beleriand. You can probably get the gist if you read the piece on its own, though.
This fixed-length drabble was written at an Insta-drabbling session on the SWG Discord for a verse prompt taken from the poem "Idyll" by Siegfried Sassoon; the title is a phrase from the verse prompt (fixed length:100 Words in MS Word). Thanks to Idle Leaves for the prompt!
As implied by the above, there is allusion to intervening canonical character death (but no detail at all).

Grey Summer Garden
Read Grey Summer Garden
Fingon emerges from the house into the grey light of dawn. Maedhros nudged him gently awake, as requested, but is already outside, standing tall beside the rose bush. There is so much dew this morning that you could believe it had rained in the night.
Maedhros gently touches a dewy rose bud.
‘Do you remember?’
Does Fingon remember? That secretive morning gift of a wet rose bud that he once preserved in private until it crumbled in his loving fingers.
‘I do.’
Maedhros carefully twists off the fresh moist bud and offers it to him openly on his extended palm.
