It was easier than he had thought it would be to leave his name behind—to put on a new one when needed, like changing one set of clothes for another. When he tired of pretending he simply retreated into the deep and ancient forests, where there was no one to call him by any name at all. The trees didn’t care, nor did the streams, nor the birds.
The world turned and changed, and kept changing, growing and shrinking at once, until even if he did care to use his real name no one would remember what it meant.
There was a strange sort of freedom in it. There was also loneliness, though he didn’t realize it until he chanced upon a familiar figure he had not even thought of in years uncounted—nearly colliding, in fact, on a busy sidewalk. They stood and stared at each other as the crowds parted around them, and horns honked on the street, and the summer sun beat down upon them.
Maglor blinked at him, Treelight shining in his eyes even still, half-hidden as they were behind a sweep of dark hair. Then he smiled—and laughed. “Daeron, is that you?”
