Beyond the Circles of Middle-earth

Many of Tolkien's characters in The Silmarillion are immortal, and a favorite approach to Silmarillion-based writing has been to imagine how those characters might have perceived different historical eras or events. This challenge takes a similar approach but asks you to imagine one of Tolkien's Silmarillion characters in one of the many fictional settings from our real-world literature. For example,

  • What if Glorfindel were to return a third time to Middle-earth and found himself in Jane Austen's world?
  • What if Aulë were one of the Sumerian gods? Would he help Gilgamesh in his quest for immortal life?
  • Or maybe Makar and Meássë were adopted by the Norse pantheon after being removed from Tolkien's. How might the Ragnarök look with them in it?
  • What if one of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves returned to life in Huxley's Brave New World?
