Turning Point

The Silmarillion has many moments when a character stands upon a crossroad: He or she will have to make a decision. At such a turning point in your story, the character realises that the journey or actions he or she is about to embark on or take will have a profound effect on either on the character or the world around him or her. Write about that moment that will define or alter the life of your character. How will he or she reflect on what is about to change and how does she or he look back on the way things were (in good, bad, or both ways)?

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • What thoughts would Fëanor have had once he set fire to the ships at Losgar?
  • Why did Elros chose the race of men and what was his reasoning behind it?
  • Why did Eärnur accept the challenge of the Witch-king to enter Minas Morgul? What went through his mind when he crossed the gate?
  • Tulkas came to the aid of the Valar during their war against Melkor. What was his reasoning for doing so? How does he reflect upon that?
  • Finarfin returned to his people after both his brothers left Aman. What was the impact of this decision on his life and those close to him?

The Tempered Steel by Lyra

The story of Maedhros' captivity in Angband, his rescue and his recovery is in the Silmarillion treated in a few paragraphs. This is a fleshed-out account of the events that may have befallen between Maedhros' imprisonment and his return to his old life... as far as that is possible.

Occasionally drifting into AU territory, depending on how closely you follow the source (WHICH source? :P).

The usual warnings apply - particularly to chapters marked with an asterisk.
