This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. Maedhros curls his hand around the steaming mug of cocoa, breathing in the rich scent as it wafts up towards his face. Taking a sip, he hums in satisfaction. “This is the highlight of my visits here, Caranthir; you make the best hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted. We could use some of it in Himring; Maglor would dearly love this to warm him up on the bitterly cold days in the midst of winter.”
Caranthir smiles. “I shall send you the recipe and what supplies we can spare.” He doesn’t hear Maedhros’ response, his mind already working on how to make the drink more transportable. If he worked in tandem with the Dwarves, perhaps they could contrive something.
