Fanwork Notes

Maeglin attempts to share some thoughts with Idril, in letter form. (I have a lot of sympathy for him, as will quickly become apparent!) For the Dark Matter challenge prompt: 'kissing cousins'. The title is from the 'Of Maeglin' chapter.

This is so sensitive and so poignant, and heartbreaking, knowing how much he was struggling internally. A beautiful piece and a lovely use of the prompt.

Ah, so heartbreaking.  You did a wonderful job putting words to the anguish of a mostly silent character, and I can only imagine how difficult it would be for Idril to read this letter. I especially love the last line about “for good or evil, I do it for love of you” — it almost sounds like a plea for forgiveness, but there’s a bit of a threat there too.

I'm so grateful for this lovely, thoughtful comment. Yes, it really struck me, how silent we're often told Maeglin is - he never seems to say how he feels, and I thought he might very well try and write something down instead (even if he never actually manages to share the letter with Idril!)

And I'm so glad you liked the last line - it was deliberately ambiguous. Alongside the knowledge that his heart is darkening and a genuine desire to warn Idril, i think there's also something along the lines of 'Don't blame me, it's not my fault'... :(
