The field and positions

Some definitions:

The ball is oval shaped, although not quite as pointy as a rugby ball.

Mark: When you’ve caught the ball from a kick.

Goal: When the ball is kicked through the centre two posts. Worth six points.

Behind: When the ball is kicked and hits the post, is kicked between a centre post and an outside post, or is touched before going between the posts. If the ball is purposely taken between the posts by the opposing team, this is known as a rushed behind. Worth one point.

Scores work like this: goal.behind.full score, eg 3 goals, 4 behinds = 22, so it would look like 3.4.22

Handball/handpass: Throwing the ball by cradling it in your hand and then hitting it with your fist. Throwing the ball in any other way is against the rules.

To start play, and after a goal, the ball is bounced in the centre circle. The ruckmen then tap the ball towards their players.

After a behind, the opposing team will kick the ball from between the posts.

You can run with the ball, however you must bounce it every 15 metres. If you fail to, it is a free kick to the opposing team.

When the ball goes out of the boundary line, it is thrown in by the umpires. If the ball is kicked over the boundary line, it is considered ‘out on the full’ and a free kick is given to the opposing team from the place where the ball crossed the line.
