I really feel for Tuor here, because these close encounters that never happened are so very heartbreaking. He was chosen by a Vala, to fulfil a purpose that would lead to hope. Túrin's side of the family was cursed by a Vala, and led to hopelessness.

I'm so interested to read this, as I've been wondering if/how Tuor found out who the man all in black was, and how he must have felt (I wrote about the Ivrin 'meeting' for Swinging 40s). The way you've explained it here makes so much sense. Poor Tuor - he suffered a lot himself, and yet it's so believable that he feels all this guilt about the suffering of Túrin's family,  and wonders if there was anything he could have done...there's little Voronwë can do except be there while he grieves. Beautifully sad.

Oh! This is excellent! Poor Tuor. It was bad enough to be alone so that time, but then so much to learn how close his kin were, how narrow a miss, not only of Turin, but of his other cousins and aunt. I forgive any bad manners!
