Fanwork Notes

For the New Year's Resolution, an idea for the Jumble Sale prompt "For Sale: herbarium from Ithilien" that I did not manage to write back then. The title was one of the word prompts from the Birthday Bash challenge. (It could be for the Swinging Forties as well; the prompt "Keep Calm and Carry On" would sort of fit, I suppose!)

This is a sequel to my earlier vignette Heat Wave in the City of the Moon, but can be read independently.

No warnings for the events in the piece itself, but as the summary suggests there are references to violent canon events as well as allusions to traumatic experiences during the Downfall of Numenor.

I enjoyed the way you tied this in to Heatwave (which I remembered from when you first posted it) and elaborated on Auntie's story. It's lovely that she was taken in and loved so by her found family, although it's so sad that he health never recovered enough for her to travel again. I'm sure she and Azruphel would have loved to explore the land together.

Thank you very much, Anerea!  I'm glad you liked revisiting this character and her story!

Although it is not in the fic, I imagine that Auntie's health did improve in Pelargir at first. She wasn't just sitting in her parlour telling stories. Her found family took her on boat trips  and showed her the sights. But she didn't make any longer journeys up the Anduin again, although I agree she would have loved showing Azruphel around Ithilien.

I looked at the timeline, because I keep forgetting, with those Numenorean lifespans and those of the House of Elros being even longer. And I decided that the interval between the Fall of Numenor, the founding of Minas Ithil, and the fall of Minas Ithil was just too long, given what I had written about Auntie earlier. Isildur and Elendil were still going strong, but Auntie seemed very unlikely to be.
