Fanwork Notes

This was written for two Scavenger Hunt prompts.

The first was an "Interactive path" prompt from Independence1776 (thank you, Indy!), a photo from Unsplash entitled "Late Summer Storm" by NOAA.

Photo of a ate summer storm on Lake Michigan: a sandy beach: the water appearing very dark under a stormy sky, with a menacing cloud in the right top corner

The second was a "History path" prompt: the title of an earlier fic by Keiliss: All Our Yesterdays (a fic I remember well and can recommend).

This vignette has some angst, as Voronwe reflects on the gradual deterioration of relations with Numenor.

Poor Voronwë, seemingly alone and facing up to another storm. This is so interesting - I've never even thought about him being involved in the affairs of Numenor, and yet it makes such perfect sense (I've often wondered which Elves attended Aldarion and Erendis' wedding feast, and now I think Voronwë must have been one of them). It's so sad for him to be confronted with Numenor's end, and to feel himself partly to blame. This is such an evocative piece, and has opened up a whole new aspect of Voronwë for me.

Thank you very much, Flora!

In canon there are some rather contradictory hints about what was going to happen with Voronwe later. All that seems clear is that he went to sea again at some point after his shipwreck in Nevrast, but although there are suggestions that he may have accompanied Tuor or Earendil, we don't really see him with them in the main versions of those stories, after Sirion.

I decided that, under the circumstances, Voronwe might have ended up in Tol Eressea instead and, in that case, why should I not involve him with Elros and Numenor? (The Numenoreans at some point did acquire Tuor's axe, apparently, although we are not told when or how.)

This was not originally intended as an angsty option! It was only later that I realized what that would mean for him, if he continued to interact with the Numenoreans.

If I manage to continue the other story about Turgon, then Turgon (who has missed all the early history of Numenor because he was in Mandos)  will find him on that beach and Voronwe will talk about Numenor to him and convince Turgon to think things through more carefully, re Numenor.

I've never thought about Voronwë in the context of Númenor, and now I won't be able to stop thinking about it!  You paint such a picture of the slow deterioration of relations that Voronwë didn't even see happening.  T-T Poor guy.

....is heartbreaking. I hadn't thought of the connection to Elros and Númenor (via Tuor of course). It must have felt doubly hard to have been one of the Tol Eressëa elves visiting the island. Until the welcome faded, and then disappeared....

Poor, dear, Voronwë, it's not your fault darling! All those beautiful memories, and then those sinking moments of realisation of what had been happening. I really feel for him, keeping his vigil there on the shore.

I really appreciate the view of these tumultuous events from Eressëa, I've never considered thar before.

(Hmph, I could have sworn I left a comment already — I distinctly remember remarking on how well it suits both prompts as well, but evidently I dreamed it.)
