Yacht Rock Silmarillion by Dawn Felagund

Fanwork Notes

I hope this playlist will take you on a journey through the early ages of Arda if the trumpet blares were replaced by burning cool sax solos and the swans of Valinor plied the waves with pontoon boats and the Two Trees twined two mingled shades of neon. I was born in 1981, and my parents listened almost exclusively to "adult contemporary" music—yacht rock, composed in the '70s and early '80s, and lacking a driving beat but possessing in unusual number of songs about boats. This music takes me back to going not by swanship to the Blessed Land but the family Dodge Caravan to the local mall. And hey, The Silmarillion has lots of boats too, and that tiny overlap in the yacht rock-Silmarillion Venn diagram was the inspiration for this playlist.

I've been working on this playlist for years in the form of notes and mental notes, and the Epic '80s challenge gave me the nudge to finally put it together to be posted. Mr. Felagund and I listen to entirely too much yacht rock, so trust I will continue to add to it as new songs nudge my brain like, "If you twist me this way and hold me upside down then I could actually be about Ungoliant's boyfriend."

Fanwork Information

Summary:

Have you ever wondered what would happen if the characters in The Silmarillion were smoooooth like they were sippin' a Sex on the Beach on a party barge in the harbor at Alqualondë? The "Yacht Rock Silmarillion" retells The Silmarillion as though the characters all had perms and had one too many buttons open, revealing too much chest hair, but hey, no one is killing anyone! This playlist follows the events of The Silmarillion through yacht rock songs.

Oh I had such fun listening to the playlist reading this!! Wow- a blast down memory lane!! Some I had actually never heard before tbh but SO APT!!! I am hard pressed to find a favourite- brilliantly curated!!

Loved the Silmarils singing 'Baby, you're the best!!' Or him singing to them- proper duet🤣🤣 but the groovy Robbie Dupree (which I remembered once I heard it!) is hilarious. It also makes you realise how creepy some songs are- Imaginary Lover (but the Police sang some very dodgy songs and Brown Sugar is pretty unpalatable)

Beren who? EXACTLY!! 'Lúthien gets shit done. Beren tags along.' Best line for me! But my fav song and THE most apt is Baker Street- Turin mooching around the forest getting everything wrong and playing hot sax- yes! Perfect choice!!

Great fun.

Ah, thank you; I'm so glad someone listened to it! I figured the descriptions might get a few chuckles but wasn't sure anyone would actually be down to play it. XD

I've been working on this for year, making notes and mental notes; Mr. Felagund and I listen to a fair bit of yacht rock because we grew up with it and it's nostalgic, and when I'd hear a song that could be twisted into The Silmarillion, I'd write it down or make a mental note. I'll likely add to it as time goes by. I know there are songs I heard and thought, "This is perfect for ____!" that I did not remember when the time came to bring it all together.

"Baker Street" ... best sax in a song ever, in my opinion. I had to use it, and it seemed to fit best for Túrin. I like to imagine the part of the story where he's loudly singing about Beleg and Gwindor is basically like, "STFU man ..." replaced by the sax solos in this song. Must have scared the hell out of the Orcs.

Thanks so much for reading/listening and commenting! <3

What an absolutely classic concept! I've never heard of the term "yacht rock" before, but it is so apt — and your selection even more so! I don't have Spotify but I can hear most of them in my head and the VIBES, the Silm vibes, are spot on! Lank kiff, bru!
