Cultus Dispatches: Fanworks, AI, and Resistance by Dawn and Grundy The fan studies column Cultus Dispatches returns with a history of how Tolkien fanworks fandom has reacted and resisted generative AI by drawing strong boundaries in a way that is not typical for the fandom.
This is my new poetical attempt to add my own interpretation to Tolkien's Cosmology as to Eru's Creation and the Valar's minds and behind-the-scene providence reasons and mechanisms.. I often review Eä as part of our own world, just in another dimension, this is why I have always seriously…
In his old age, Isildur's former esquire Ruinamacil, known to later histories only as Ohtar, writes his own account of his escape from the ambush at Gladden Fields and journey to Imladris, and the history of his friend whom Isildur ordered to flee with him.
Fëanor shrugged, studying the contents of his wine glass. “Something must be done about that house. It will fall down eventually.” “It does not follow that it must be you that tears it down single-handedly. Are you sure you do not want help?” “It’s not as though I…
Rescued from a brutal Angband hunt, an ex-thrall with a strange and powerful artifact embedded in his spine is brought to Himring, for it is one of the only places in Beleriand which welcomes such folk. Though he has no memories of his life before, Anniavas slowly becomes accustomed to his new…
History of Tradition

By definition, fanworks fandom does not draw a lot of boundaries, but community archives and events have taken a strong stance against AI-generated fanworks due to ethical considerations and member input.
In a book as full of death as the Quenta Silmarillion, grief and mourning are surprisingly absent. The characters who receive grief and mourning—and those who don't—appear to do so due to narrative bias. Grief and mourning (or a lack of them) serve to draw attention toward and away from objectionable actions committed by characters.
This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.
Bilbo, the strange old hobbit with the wandering feet, senses something special in young Frodo the first time he sees the lad; as they become close, they find in each other a cameraderie not well understood by other hobbits. Five poignant moments between Bilbo and Frodo Baggins over the course…

Hi, glad you liked it! I had to have an archer!Legolas story, of course, and though one day I am planning to write a more serious one this one had to be written. Naughty?? Me??? *** looks behind...***
He, he, I had a big giggle writing it, so I am very happy it causes the desired effect! Thanks for reading and for your review, it's always a nice surprise to get one!
*** Evil cackle *** I just LOVE getting Manwe into trouble. If you have not read my Kinslayer and you wish to spare the time, you will find more of the same there. Thanks for the comment!
Ahhh, it's great you like my Legolas! Before I read the Silm I had this thing about him (well before the movies), so that I had a picture of him in my mind, with rather a wild and stubborn streak. With Gimli playing troublemaker, and both of them bored, what can you expect but mischief? And yes, Manwe is always going to get some stick in my stories... Thanks a lot for reading and for your comment, oshun!
Ha, ha, very amusing. I have often wondered what they got up to in Valinor in the fourth age and now I know! :) It was probably a good thing that Tulkas didn't get involved as well. Great stoy, keep writing and I will look forward to reading more, Ham!
Glad you enjoyed it, Hamfast Gamgee! I think it was Mark Twain who said paradise would be boring. I hoped to make it a bit more lively, with a bit of help. Tulkas was off fishing at the time, I think, but there will be more trouble when he hears about it, I reckon...
Thanks a lot for posting a review. Much appreciated!
Livinlavida indeed, lol! Crazy and so much fun to read; I'm definitely growing fond of your witty sense of humour! I couldn't help noticing a certain interest in Thranduil, and thus hope to see him in an entertaining fic of yours some time :)
Good things come to those to wait. I certainly wish to write something with him, I am just shy. Of course it would help if he came for a visit, had a coffee with cakes and showed me his ring. At the moment, his only cameo has been in Five Things, but I will plan a proper appearance for him.
I am glad you like my humour, but yes, it is crazy.
Ah, yes, I like my elvish archers naked... and so does Manwë, it seems. Gimli certainly knows how to liven up the boredom of Valinor. I'm glad you giggled. Thank you for reviewing!
Thanks for popping by, what a lovely surprise! It's a bit of a romp, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. No writing done lately, sadly, but I hope I'll find time to get back to it in the future. Likewise, I hope you're inspired.
