Grief, Grieving, and Permission to Mourn in the "Quenta Silmarillion" by Dawn Walls-Thumma
In a book as full of death as the Quenta Silmarillion, grief and mourning are surprisingly absent. The characters who receive grief and mourning—and those who don't—appear to do so due to narrative bias. Grief and mourning (or a lack of them) serve to draw attention toward and away from objectionable actions committed by characters.
Tolkien, Lunatic Physicists, and Abnegation by Cynthia (Cindy) Gates
This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

[Writing] Why did Éowyn ask Faramir if he'd rather have a "woman of the race of Númenor"? by Quente
For most of my life, when reading Lord of the Rings, I read it through the perspective of Gandalf's words about Éowyn, that she'd spent years trapped as a caregiver, watching the realm she love fall from honor into disgrace.

I am a Korean. My english is very terrible. Forgive, please.
My feelings for this back-story of Angband is too hard to explain. I’m tearing up a little right now and smiling at the same time. This was a poignant and lovely and I absolutely enjoyed reading it. The characters were very vivid and well written. Melkor was thoroughly awesome. I could really feel his selfishness and his arrogance from the way he talked and acted. I liked how vividly you described it, especially when Melkor touches him. The interaction between Melkor and Sauron was wonderfully executed, as well! You ended things well with the menace exchange between Melkor and Sauron, too!
I could hear not only the dialogue but the tones as well so clearly. I could see every one of Melkor's movements. It was such a excellent portrayal of the relationship between Morgoth and his lieutenant.
I hope to read next of your stories. Keep on writing! Angband style!
Hello there! This is the most amazing and lovely review ever! And if you call your English terrible then ours is horrible as well, pff! We're so happy that you enjoyed the first chapter so thoroughly, your review is amazing and it truly made our day todayand motivated us to keep writing. We can only pray to have more reviewers like you in he future :3! Also we must apologize for being lazy and not submitting more chapters here on time - because in fact there are 3 more chapters already (perhaps meanwhile you have already found them on our fanfiction net account) and now we updated the story on here too, in case you havn't read them still. We really hope to hear more of your impressions, especially on 4th chapter :3 Thank you so very much for your support!
ps. It's amazing you're from Korea! You can appreciate our bad gangnam style jokes all the more XDDD! More funny things with Sauron and Melkor should appear on our tumblr soon.
I really love this. I seriously do. I actually had to make an account here to review this, you know. I've been reading fics for years here, and never felt the desire to review.
Anyway, my favourite characters are Morgoth and Sauron, so you can see how excited I was to see a story with both of them in it. :) I just devoured all four chapters so far, and I am eagerly awaiting the next chapter.
Your depiction of Sauron is pretty much how I see him, too. (Not to mention that picture is great. :D I giggled.) While I was a bit uneasy over the sexual stuff in chapter two, I can see how it fits and I felt like it was not overdone at all. (I've stumbled onto some pretty bad, poorly written stuff in that area and it made me gag and cringe)
And your writing style is fantastic! It is a breath of fresh air to see a story utilizing this writing style.
Anyway, again, wonderful story so far and I cannot wait to read more! :D
Woah! What a review! ;u; We feel extremely honoured and so very special that you would register here just for us and that you like it so much! We've both read Silmarillion quite recently and of course found the bad guys most entertaining and full of possibilities! And we just couldn't believe that there are hardly any fics on them after all these years. After a while of being frustrated with that fact we decided to just go ahead and improve the situation a little XD
We're happy that you like the portrayals of the characters. We're doing our best to stay true to their nature, of course we have our own visions of them (since the legendary style employed by Tolkien leaves a lot of room for interpretation, as many things about those two were left unsaid) but in fact all is based on facts from the book. And as to the style... well, we just couldn't imagine writing a Silmarillion story without the lovely archaic Silmarillion writing style! <3
Thank you so much for your feedback! Each review is incredibly precious to us and one like this just... just makes us want to go and write more RIGHT NOW XD! Though sadly we don't have too much time to do that, so I'd say, expect next chapter somewhere around the weekend <3 We hope to hear from you again :3!
ps. and of course there will be more pictures soon too XD Though most likely on our Angband tumblr and not here, since most of them are rather funny and wouldn't really fit the chapters XD
Wow, this looks like a really good story idea! Oh, It's so sexy....
You really did capture my thoughts quite well- and I honestly mean that as a compliment! I was sitting in terror as I read it, but still it gripped me so hard that I could not stop reading it, did not want to stop reading it.
Especially I loved the sexy scene - Melkor and sauron.
I thought you had some really cool and interesting ways of portraying Sauron in this chapter. You get the story started with problems, obedience, and action immediately, which is great. You show Melkor as paranoic, but as a tough, dogmatic man too, which fits with his character from The Silmarillion.
What Sauron might have been like before he turned to evil is a fascinating topic to me and I like your interpretation. I think you’re doing a great job with all the characters so far, keeping them in character and giving them depth.
It was very well-written! I'm looking forward to next!
Hello again, oh wow, we're thrilled that you like it so much *u*
We try to stay as close to The Silmarillion as we can with both the storyline and the characters, we just, let's say "fill in the holes" and write between the lines, since Tolkien leaves a lot of things unsaid and a lot of room for imagination. And we really are honoured that our interpretation is worthy <3
Thanks so much for these reviews, you can't imagine how wonderful it is to read them! We've just updated with chapter 5 and we hope you'll keep enjoying ;D! (and since you liked the sexy scene then you might like something here too... hehe XD)
Oh my godness! This chapter brought tears to my eyes. I did not think I could finish reading this story! This is absolutely awsome, the plot, the writing, the combination with poetry and The Masters own words, the emotions. Why creatures of darkness, tend to make me weep...
Sweet Sauron, Angbands master is interested in his body. Very sexy, oh god, hurrah! I totally love such scenes XD
I also loved the Melkor and Sauron duet. Their relationship is really amazing. Your descriptions of the masters of angband are the most interesting part of the story, and it's where your descriptive talents shine.
Melkor smiled, and I did too. I love how you have blended song and prose... fantastic. no matter if fear, love, doubt or solidarity, the story became alive in front of my eyes. I know this bittersweet feeling at the end too well, and I will be looking forward to seeing more from you.
It's really a sad thing that this story is coming to the War of Wrath. But well, So I wait anxiously for next.
And you bring tears to our eyes with those amazing reviews! The way you point out everything you like is just epic, that's exactly what we want to know! You are our dream-come-true really, reviewers such as you are what makes it all worth it! So thank you so much for being here and sharing your impressions with us!
We're especially happy that you like the way the poetry was entwined into the story, we were a bit apprehensive about how our readers would like it XD
And tada! We have now updated with 6th chapter here :3! It's a bit on the darker side perhaps but hey, there's another silly picture of Sauron at the end to compensate XDDD And the story is indeed headed for the War of Wrath - in fact the very next part is going to be about it. And yet, that is definitely not where the fic will end, so do not be frightened! C:
Thanks so much again, we seriously love you XD!
Heya! The last two chapters have been excellent! Your update reminded me that I didn't review last chapter, and even though I have no time to give a proper review right now (skipping off to work in 10 minutes), I figured I'd at least let you know I saw and read the two last chapters and thought they've been fantastic...
I'll give a proper review in a day or two, but keep on writing! I'm loving this! :D
Oh thanks for dropping by! We're glad to know you're still with us here and enjoying the story! :D If you do find some time later, then we'd indeed love to hear more about what you think on the two recent chapters! For now good luck with thy work XD!
I have been waiting for such a fic as this for years! Excellent job! The last chapter was really great! Morgoth's madness, Sauron's care and growing disappointment! Very good characterization!
Ah, we have been waiting for such fic too but we're impatient so we decided to speed up the wait by writing it XD We're really glad you're enjoying it and thank you for sharing your impressions with us :3!
OH, NO!!!!! Aw, how sweet. Almost brought tears to my eyes. :') So dramatic and sad!
The chapter is dynamic, compelling, and beautifully terrible, all in all very well done. This was a great halfway point drabble, too, by the way, kind of giving a more broad look at their love. Nice work. You captured his thoughts and feelings perfectly in just a few words, and turning things back around to focus on character was a last scene. Their relationship is an unfinished tale. How fitting, and how sad. So poetic and emotional in the language and the tone, so very sad and so very tragic and farewell. The metaphors were beautiful and compelling.
I could feel Sauron's agony as he laments he's master with their last scene. Through Sauron, I vividly get the sense of Melkor’s overwhelming, pathetically, forceful presence. The characterizations are strong, the language and mood is elegant, yet appropriately dark, and the flashback is a potent rendition of the farewell scene. And the cutting off at the end, I literally gasped- very powerful. I've been reading a lot of sad fic lately, especially this was very touching. I keep reading it over and over.
Still, Good job. I really loved this one.
Hey, late thank you for another review! :3
It is sad, yes, but it was bound to be so with the way their story goes in Silmarillion :'C And it is indeed quite powerful and macabre that the victors maim Melkor like that (and yet somehow he still comes back to destroy Sun and Moon in the end, we have that joke that he tossed his feet at them XDDD) In fact there's still a few chapters to go and you may yet be surprised with some turns of events - it will not be all sad. Yet now we have exams so the story will continue in February only, sorry for that! Thanks so much again for these fantastic detailed reviews, you're literally too good for us! :33
