This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

‘I do find it amusing,’ he said as he un-fastened his golden curls, ‘how rumour continuously places you and my brother into bed.’
Ecthelion snorted. ‘You would,’ he muttered. ‘You always find stupidity amusing’.
Erestor turned around and patted Ecthelion’s hair fondly. ‘Take it as a compliment,my dear. They are putting the prettiest faces together. Well, maybe not just faces...’ He winked.
‘Glorfindel finds it even more ridiculous,’ Ecthelion replied. ‘especially now the rumours are making it hard for him to court the maiden he wants.’
Erestor stared at him in disbelief. ‘Maiden,’ he replied flatly. ‘What a fool.’
