The valley lies gilded
outside my window
a scene to be painted
if I remembered how.

Behind me stands shelf
after shelf willed with literature
if only I would remember
the patience to read.

My hand rests on the pommel
of the blade by my side, still hated,
if only i could remember
how to put it down.
