This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

I enjoyed listening through this; it was interesting to see how the lyrics connected to Maedhros's life and personality. And you did a great job finding songs that fit him so well! I especially liked the songs "Blood on My Name" and "Weathered"; the lyrics almost seemed as if they had been written for Maedhros, and the Lazarus imagery is giving me thoughts.

Thank you! I always did enjoy how this one turned out. "Weathered" is a song I've loved since I was a kid but I was listening to it in the car one day and was like Oh this is Maedhros (TM). I'm glad you enjoyed the Lazarus imagery for him too! Sure he came back from Angband and it seems like a miracle, but he is definitely not the same anymore...
