Onwards

Finwe learns of Elwe's disappearance.

“He did not return to his people,” the messenger says. “He is gone, Finwë.”

Míriel slips her hand into his palm, threading her fingers between his. He feels her eyes on him. But Finwë’s spirit has drifted up to the stars, as if he might find Elwë among them. Elwë had never truly wanted to return to Aman; he went for Finwë. If the Dark Rider has claimed him, he cannot be saved. But Finwë will not give up hope that he will be found.

But not by him.

“We journey onwards,” he says, and his fingers curl around Míriel’s.
