A Bright Winter's Night

Estel had climbed up into the crown of a tree (a feat he was secretly very proud of) and made himself comfortable with his back to the trunk.

It was winter, the tree was sleepy (his new family had taught him to listen to the long, slow wisdom of the old trees) but didn’t mind the company. Her branches were bare, giving Estel a perfect view of the sky.

It was icy cold, the snow crackled when you walked over it and his family had snuggled up together in their home of hides and branches, but he’d come out to look at the sky. A sky full of stars! It was especially beautiful when it was this cold. (He didn’t dare to say that to his new family. For them the cold was of the Enemy and he didn’t want to draw suspicion on him.)

The jewels of Elbereth winked at him and there was so much joy in his heart he felt like singing. If only his brothers could be here with him. If only they could share in his happiness.
