In the deep dark forest by daughterofshadows
Fanwork Notes
A combination of prompts for the Vintage Challenge (Song Fic) and the Bestiary of Arda Challenge (Wolf by First Aid Kit, the song from which these lyrics are taken).
Also, they are werewolves and running through the woods in wolf-form. It's not mentioned in the fic, but it's important to the image in my head.

Chapter 1
Read Chapter 1
He rushes through the forest, near blind with panic. If only he can run fast enough, perhaps he will finally break free from the strangling grasp of Nan Elmoth. He can no longer hear his mother behind him, but he does not dare stop. Dawn slowly creeps across the horizon. Just a few more steps and he can leave the forest behind. Just a few more steps…
Holy light, oh, burn the night
Oh, keep the spirits strong
Watch it grow, child of woe, oh
Keep holding on
The trees bleed together in front of her eyes. She has been trapped in this labyrinth for years. No matter where she turns, there is no way out. She is a fly in a spider’s web, the huntress reduced to prey. Prayers tumble from her lips, useless though they may be, begging Oromë to keep her son safe, even if it is too late for her now.
And I hope for a trace to lead me back home from this place
But there was no sound, there was only me and my disgrace
I love the rhythm of each of…
I love the rhythm of each of their chants. The difference between Meaglin's hope and Aredhel's loss of it is so poignant. And I love that they've resorted to werewolfing in order to escape.
I'm honestly not sure…
I'm honestly not sure whether the werewolfing is a means of escape, or whether Nan Elmoth twisted them in such a way that it turned them into wolves, because I could not figure out how to include the detail in the story one way or the other.
The song really fits Aredhel, Eöl and Maeglin so well, I'm surprised I never considered this before. I love the song!
