Read History has its eyes on you

The crown settles on his head, heavy and cold.

His blood rushes in his ears, drowning out even the waves crashing on the shore.

He looks out over the elves gathered to witness his coronation, their eyes and expectations weighing on his shoulders.

Gil-galad is one in a long line of dead kings and with the war coming ever closer to their doorstep, he knows it is only a matter of time before he joins his forebears.

Morgoth has been defeated and Angband has been broken but so have the lands he calls home.

Their victory comes at the cost of Beleriand. The forces of those who stood against the Dark One flee across the Ered Luin as the water rises behind them. Soon, it will have consumed the lands completely.

It is on the slopes of Orodruin that fate finally catches up to him. In spite of his own expectations, Gil-galad rules longer than any other king of the Noldor in Middle-earth and when he dies, it is side by side with a friend.

Struck down by Sauron’s own hand, he meets death with open eyes and the knowledge that others will continue the fight in his stead.

Oooh! The heaviness of expectation and dread at his coronation is powerful. I've never thought of it before, and, yeah!

And then to have to put a brave face on for his people in the face the unbelievably steep price of victory.

I love your "side by side with a friend" here.

Excellent use of the prompts!

Thank you!

I saw those prompts and immediately thought of Gil-galad and thankfully I finally had some time to actually sit down and write it!

The weight of expectations was also something that I played around with in my fic for Maglor's MA presentation, so it's been on my mind quite a lot recently.

And it's just so fascinating to think about. By all accounts, Gil-Galad was still quite young to become king, at least by elven standards and to then be saddled with this burden at such a crucial, terrible time, must have been very difficult
