Meet & Greet

Meet & Greet SWG challenge banner - illustration of three nesting dolls. The largest is the door of Moria, the middle Celebrimbor, and the smallest Narvi with a pick. Text gives the challenge name and dates.

While the SWG hopes to inspire creativity, we also look to foster community. To that end, we’re trying something new with our Matryoshka challenge format. (This is something of an experiment, but we’re hoping it gets SWG members talking, newcomers and long-timers alike!)

This month, if you would like to attempt the challenge, regardless of the difficulty level you choose, you will be given only one prompt to start you off. The rest of your prompts will come from interacting with other SWG members, whether that’s in comments, conversations on our Discord, on other social media, or in-person. (The interaction does not have to be on the SWG website itself, or even necessarily in SWG spaces.) When giving prompts to others, you are free to pass on any of the prompts you have. The mods will also have a few prompts up their sleeves to give out in interactions rather than requests for starter prompts, so feel free to talk to us, too!

How to Request Your First Prompt

Fill out the form here to request your first prompt. Note that you will also be able to add any information here about whether and how other participants should contact you. We will maintain a list on the challenge page. To update your information, contact us or fill out another form.

How to Find Prompts

We will maintain a list of participating members. You can:

  • Contact participants directly through the site or social media.
  • Grab a prompt that is posted publicly on their social media. If you prefer not to interact with others, this is the approach for you!
  • As part of the effort to get folks interacting, we will also be hosting two instadrabbling sessions on the SWG Discord. Participation is not required, but it will be one way to get a few prompts! Instadrabbling will occur on 17 February 2024 at 13:00/1PM until 17:00/5PM UTC (see this in your timezone) and again on 18 February 2024 at midnight until 2:00AM UTC (see this in your timezone). Information on how to join the SWG Discord is here, and we will post an invite on the SWG tumblr on the day of the event. Not sure what instadrabbling is? See our instadrabbling FAQ here!

How to Share Prompts

It is up to you how you share your prompts with others! If you are comfortable interacting one-on-one, you can ask others to contact you via the SWG site or social media. You can post your prompt publicly on your social media as well. (If you prefer not to interact one-on-one, this is here for you!) If you post your prompt to Tumblr, use the tag #swg meet and greet.

Other Rules

You can choose your own difficulty level for this challenge. Our Matryoshka difficulty levels are as follows:

  • Beginner: Two prompts
  • Easy: Three prompts
  • Medium:  Five prompts
  • Difficult: Seven prompts

Typically, we ask Matryoshka challenge participants to use the prompts in the order they are sent. For this year's challenge, you can use prompts in any order you want. If you have more prompts than you want to complete, you can pick and choose the ones you want.

Challenge participants can either gather all of their prompts before beginning their fanwork or start a fanwork and gather prompts as they go.

If you've read to the bottom of the directions, yay, thank you, you've made Dawn (who is a teacher and loves when people read directions, as her students almost never do) very happy. Have a prompt for free: “Don’t tell anybody!”

Thank you to Cuarthol for this month's banner and stamps!
