Fanwork Notes

I had the idea for a hobbit-song after listening to 'Wildflower Jigs' by the Gothard Sisters (one of the prompts for SWG's September instadrabbling session - thank you, Anna(IdleLeaves)!)

My thinking is that this is just one, basic, version; and anyone could come up with extra lines/verses. I imagine part of the fun being that it becomes longer and longer, and faster and faster while being sung (especially the chorus, which is really only a list of flower names, in honour of the prompt, and could easily turn into a kind of memory game!)

So, if anyone reading would like to expand on this or make suggestions - please do feel free. :)

1420

Read 1420

Back in Fourteen-Twenty, ‘the Great Year of Plenty’

The weather was usually fine

But when there were showers, we danced through the flowers

And sang ‘til we saw the sun shine!

Chorus:

Oh the daisies and dandelions, bluebells and buttercups, poppies and primroses too!

Back in 1420, the Great Year of Plenty

The fruit was abundant and sweet

We feasted on plums (with no harm to our tums)

And the strawberries went down a treat!

Chorus

Back in 1420, the Great Year of Plenty

The harvest brought lots of good cheer

The supply of leaf was quite beyond belief

But the best thing of all was the beer!

Chorus

Back in 1420, the Great Year of Plenty

An age of tree-planting was born

And dear Master Samwise gave us a great surprise -

The Shire's very special mallorn!

Chorus

Back in 1420, the Great Year of Plenty

The children had rich golden hair

Then next Spring there came, with her beautiful name,

Our beloved Elanor the Fair!

Chorus

Back in 1420, the Great Year of Plenty

The Travellers told tales of yore

So do take a look at the famous Red Book

Where you'll find all their stories, and more!

Oh the daisies and dandelions, bluebells and buttercups, poppies and primroses too!

Chapter End Notes

I couldn't resist the silly plums/tums rhyme (which is a nod to Tolkien's phrase 'and no one was ill', in relation to young hobbits' excessive consumption of fruit!)

Frodo is sadly, and deliberately, not mentioned.

This is dedicated to my baby grandson, who seems to love Wildflower Jigs as much as I do! We dance around to it together almost every time I see him - and I hope to introduce him to hobbits before too long. :)

Enjoyed this! I’m always impressed when someone can write poetry that has rhythm and flows as well as this one. I can just imagine hobbits singing it as they remember that magical year when everything flowered and children could eat as much fruit as they liked without getting a tummy ache. ❤️
