The hut lay in the dark under the elms. She edged the door open and saw that she had been waited for. The hearth fire, which had been carefully built up, still smouldered faintly under the embers. Beside it, Beren, sitting up in his comfortable chair, had dozed off and sagged a little sideways, snoring gently. In the lantern on the table, the candle had guttered out. She bent and kissed his grizzled hair.
Outside, the waters of the Adurant flowed away under the stars, each wave carrying away a little more time, so soon lost and the more treasured.
