prompt: night, risk, old, fate AND I stand amid the roar/ of a surf-tormented shore

Read to stand amid the roar

Círdan acts quickly, knowing, with the centuries of careful watching, the risks of being too careful. The letter came in the night, the messenger ragged and tired, bearing a battered crown. Fingon has fallen. Turgon has disappeared. The fate of Beleriand has shifted once again.
His fosterling kneels in the sand, and Círdan has never felt so old. He swears, swears an Oath in the name of the Allfather and his father and his father before him, to lead the Noldor until his own death. He will do well, this last scion of Finwë’s house, grey-eyed and silver-haired. He must.

I love how poignant this is! Such a humble start to a long and impressive kingship  There's always a loneliness about Gil-galad, I think; but Cirdan must have been such an important, constant presence in his life, and this scene feels so right.
