Fanwork Notes
This fic was inspired by the Finnish Christmas song Sparven om julmorgonen/Varpunen jouluaamuna, written by the poet and author Zacharias Topelius, though I toned down the overtly Christian aspects of the song's story by a lot and substituted something that seemed more setting-appropriate. If you're not familiar with the song, I do recommend checking it out, I think it's very beautiful! I believe the English wikipedia article about the song provides an English translation as well (though it is, as is only right, translated from the Swedish lyrics, and therefore has some slightly different nuances than the Finnish lyrics I was thinking of while writing)
