Without Tears

When they hear about Lalaith, Húrin weeps openly, with great sobs that shake his body. Morwen only turns and leaves the room without a word.

Rían follows her. Morwen has gone to Túrin’s room, where the boy still lies sick with fever. She is changing the wet cloths on Túrin’s forehead. Her shoulders are stiff and her back very straight.

“Morwen,” Rían says softly. “None forbids you to weep for her.”

Morwen stiffens further. “And what good will tears do?” she asks harshly. “Did tears save my daughter? Will tears save my son? I will not let Morgoth have him.”
