About Me

I became a Tolkien fan when, at the age of six, my dad showed me that scene from The Fellowship of the Ring where Arwen rescues Frodo and the two are chased by all nine Ringwraiths. My dad read the books to me as the films were released, and for years, my pretend play featured little else than epic battles against droves of Orcs, gallops across the Gap of Rohan, and my marriage to Legolas. When my dad tried to read me the Silmarillion, I must confess I fell asleep. Years later, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was just the story of suffering and loss that I needed to survive. As I spent more time with those tales, I saw my own struggles written on the pages: the weight of family, the pain of estrangement, regret for lost years. I read of Maedhros' rescue from Thangorodrim while recovering from surgery. A few weeks later, I called up a cousin I hadn't been close to in years. I wept over Maglor's choice of an endless, lonely half-life while emerging from a lonely half-life of my own. Needless to say, the Silmarillion struck a chord that I haven't been able to unhear. The characters' stories, as I imagine them, have swirled in my mind for years now, and I hope to honor them, and honor my own story, with the words I write here.
