14th International Tolkien Mailing Competition
The Hungarian Tolkien Society invites you to join the international “Quendi” category of the Tolkien Mailing Competition: five rounds of quizzes, riddles and creative tasks. This category is organised in English, open to any individual participant, and also to teams of 2–5 people. The five rounds of the competition will last from November to April. Application deadline: 5 November, 2026.
The Tolkien Mailing Competition ("TLV" abbreviated from its Hungarian equivalent "Tolkien Levelező Verseny") takes place for the 21st time this year—and it is international for the 14th time. In the first years it was organised only in Hungarian, and only for groups of Hungarian students aged 10–18-years. As many people above this age group became interested in the competition, we launched a separate category for individuals in Hungarian, and at the same time we decided to go international. The outcome was definitely encouraging. In the past few years the international Quendi category had many participants (and for a while even an organiser) from various foreign countries: you can see here the final results of the previous competition.

In the international Quendi category both the challenges and the communication will be entirely in English—but you don't have to be perfectly fluent in English for taking part in the competition. You only have to be able to understand the texts by Tolkien, and maybe to write a story or an essay—it does not have to be of academic level. The competition was originally devised for middle and high school students, and we did not make big changes in the style, but it is open to anybody who feels young enough for it. You can always choose to count your years by Elvish standards!
Participation in the Quendi category requires a thorough knowledge of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. Other works by Tolkien may be needed occasionally, as some questions (riddles, quizzes, etc.) can refer to those, but you will have about four weeks for each round, that is, plenty of time to look up in the books everything you might need.
Besides the quizzes, there will be creative challenges. For example, you may be asked to describe a situation, write a short poem, make a drawing or take a photograph, etc. We would like to be proud of our participants, so we ask you to share the rights of your creative productions royalty-free (and you accept this condition by your registration for the competition). Your works—with due credit to authors/artists—might be published by the Hungarian Tolkien Society, e.g. on our website, www.tolkien.hu, or in our journal, the Lassi Laurië. (You can read about Lassi Laurië in English here.) Please do not publish these works yourself without consulting us first, and especially not before the end of the competition. (Artwork submitted by teams is credited as teamwork by default, but you can add the name of the actual author/artist for each piece.)
You can participate in the Quendi category alone as an individual competitor, or you can participate as a member of a team of 2–5 people. The individual competitors and the teams will receive the same set of tasks, but the winner will be announced separately for individuals and teams.
As an individual competitor, you can make the decision to solve only the quizzes or only the creative tasks in each round: besides the absolute winners of the individual and team subcategories, the separate winners of the lexical and the creative parts will also be announced. This choice is only available for individual competitors, teams are expected to do the full version!
We will go on with the team competition only if we receive at least 5 applications from teams. If we have to cancel the team competition, team members will have the opportunity to compete on their own or to withdraw their application. There is also a maximum limit of 60 competitors (individuals and teams counted together) in the Quendi category (and we got quite close to this limit last year).
The contest starts in November and continues until April. Every month you will receive the questions of the next round (five rounds overall), and you will have to submit your solutions until the indicated deadline (you will have about four weeks for each round). Communication is done via e-mail. Our e-mail address is tlv[at]tolkien.hu: questions and comments are always welcome there. We are happy to answer all your questions about the competition—except disclosing the solutions of the actual tasks.
Not submitting your solutions for two consecutive rounds means quitting the competition.
There will be no prizes in the international category, only the public announcement of your achievement and a certificate sent by e-mail. There is no registration fee, either.

Registration as an individual competitor: choose the “I am competing alone.” option on the form.
Registration as a team: each team member should fill in a registration form separately, choose the “I am a member of a team of 2-5 people.” option, and provide the same team name. We also need a contact person for each team. Please agree on a unique team name and choose a contact person from the team before starting the registration.
You should see an automatic confirmation message after the successful registration, but if you are in doubt about the success of your registration, ask the organisers via e-mail whether they have received your registration or not! You should receive the first round of tasks during the week after the application deadline. If you do not receive it, write to us!

Ainur Week 2025
This is a Tolkien fandom week dedicated to the Ainur, J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional species. The Ainur, including the Valar and Maiar, are the first beings created by Eru Ilúvatar in the Professor’s lore. They are powerful, mysterious, and even controversial. Come celebrate the Ainur by creating fanworks centered around them! Ainur Week first took place in 2023 and is happening for the third time this year!
This year, Ainur Week will run from September 1 – 9, 2025.
Code of Conduct
Basically, please be kind and respectful of other people. Here are the core rules:
1. Do not repost other people’s fanworks without their explicit permission.
2. Respect other people’s interpretations of Tolkien’s characters and relationships. Do you disagree with a certain ship or a creator’s perspective on a character? Please keep that to yourself.
3. Fanworks that are bigoted/ prejudiced in their messaging are not allowed. You may, however, depict instances of bigotry/ prejudice in your fanwork. E.g. You can write about characters experiencing sexism, but fanworks that endorse or promote sexism are not permitted.
Violation of these rules will result in your being blocked.

- The Finwëan Sibling Prompt Fest is an event focusing specifically on Finwë’s children: Fëanor, Findis, Fingolfin, Lalwen, & Finarfin. You may create for any ship or gen relationship, as long as one or multiple of the siblings is the primary focus of your work.
- You may create for any rating or genre; there are no content restrictions, as long as you adhere to AO3’s rules and tagging requirements.

- Plagiarism will result in your ban from this and any future iterations of the fest.
- AI generated Art and Stories are not allowed.
- Minors may not submit E-rated art/fic or request E-rated art/fic.

Requirements
- Stories must be at least 1000 words. There is no maximum wordcount.
- Each Story must be complete and entirely your own. You can not submit a WIP. It also can’t be part of an ongoing series - if you want to continue your story in the future, that’s up to you, but for the fest there needs to be a proper ending.
- You’re welcome to collaborate! Just let us know your co-author when you sign up.
- We advise you to get a Beta though it is not required.
- Art can be any form or medium, and as long as you consider it a complete work, we’re not going to tell you that it isn’t.
- Gifsets must be at least 6 gifs that tie together to tell some kind of story.
- Moodboards must be at least 5 images and follow a theme and/or narrative.
- Fanvids must be at least 30 seconds long and tell some kind of story.
Prompting and Claiming
- You can leave up to ten prompts, and you don’t have to create anything in order to do so.
- Each prompt can be claimed once for fic, and once for art (regardless of art medium). Claiming will work on a first come, first served basis.
- You can claim one prompt. If you finish before the deadline, you’re welcome to claim another one!
Submissions
- All fics must be posted to the AO3 Collection. The collection will be moderated, and works kept hidden until the reveal date. If you don’t know how to add fics to the collection don’t worry, there will be a how-to post later.
- If artists wish to post their submissions to the AO3 Collection as well they may though it isn’t required. Artists will be given a date to post their work and then we will reblog it on this blog.
- Works will be revealed over the course of a week or two (depending on how many there are).

Tolkien OC Week 2025
Tolkien OC Week is a fandom event on Tumblr for OCs and underdeveloped characters in Tolkien's world. This event celebrates both characters of Tolkien's world and our own characters that need more love, by creating and reblogging all kind of fanworks, like fanfiction, fanart, fanvideos, fancrafts, headcanons, playlists, edits, moodboards etc.
The event is modded by @yellow-faerie and @elamarth-calmagol, and will take place between 25th August - 31st August 2025 for the fourth year running.
NSFW text entries are allowed and we’ll tag them accordingly when we reblog them, but please put them behind a “read more”.
We'll also be tracking the tag #tolkienocweek during this week!
Prompts
1. Family Members (25th August)
Tolkien may have given us all the family trees of the hobbits, but he definitely didn't finish the ones for elves, dwarves, or rangers. Add an original character to a gap in a family tree, such as a missing wife, or create a whole new family member, like a second child for Galadriel and Celeborn.
2. Diversity (26th August)
It isn't the 1940s anymore! Create an OC whose race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, neurotype, or disability differs from what people usually imagine when they picture Middle Earth. For a world to feel real, its people must be diverse!
3. Forgotten Characters (27th August)
With so many versions of his stories, Tolkien dropped a lot of characters along the way. Choose one of these forgotten characters, such as Finwe's daughter Faniel, and share a fanwork about them.
4. Alternate Universes (28th August)
Share an OC from an alternate universe, such as a modern character isakai-d into Middle Earth, a daughter for Feanor, or a post-canonical love interest for someone who died in the original story. Anything goes!
5. Relationships (29th August)
Today, share an original character who is close to a canon character in some way. The relationship does not have to be romantic or sexual. The characters might be friends, colleagues, neighbors, or even arch enemies. What matters for this prompt is exploring the relationships between the original and canon characters.
6. Off the Map (30th August)
Tolkien's maps only stretch do far into the east and south, and his images of Valinor show even less. Today, give us a character who doesn't live within the bounds of the canonical maps. Maybe they live in Harad or Rhun, or the briefly mentioned continent created to the west of sunken Numenor when the world was made round, or even another planet within Arda.
7. Freeform
Every fandom week has to have a free day! Choose a prompt to do a second time, expand on an OC you already shared, or share an OC that doesn't fit any prompt.
Since we want to celebrate creations about neglected characters all year long, the mods will occasionally reblog posts and fancreations about OCs and underdeveloped characters. If you would like to see your post on our blog, you're very welcome to tag #tolkienocweek. Since tumblr's tagging system is often being faulty, don't hesitate to message us, too!

Tolkien Gen Week 2025
Tolkien Gen Week is a week-long Tumblr event to appreciate all of the incredible characters and relationships within Tolkien’s legendarium that fall under the broad category of “gen.” There is a great wealth of wonderful gen content in the Tolkien fandom, but those creations are not always the most visible because of the shipping-focused nature of fandom at large. This week is an effort to give them the appreciation they deserve.
This year, Tolkien Gen Week will run from August 11-17, 2025!

Fantastic Worlds Exhibit
Travel to Middle-earth, Narnia, and beyond!
In 1981, Karen Wynn Fonstad authored The Atlas of Middle-earth, the official geographic guide to the world of author J.R.R. Tolkien. This summer, for the first time, Wynn Fonstad’s original hand-drawn maps will be exhibited to the public.
From July 21–August 1, stop by the Robinson Map Library in historic Science Hall to get a glimpse at how this groundbreaking cartographer shaped our collective understanding of fantasy geography. Curated by her son, UW–Madison alum and current Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Oregon Mark Fonstad, the Fantastic Worlds exhibition will combine Wynn Fonstad’s original, hand-drawn maps with examples of her finalized published works, explanations of her techniques, and stories of her experience turning written, fictional geographic information into visual representations.
The exhibition will also include examples of fantasy maps created by UW–Madison Geography students over the years, so you’ll be able to appreciate first-hand the impact Wynn Fonstad’s work has had on cartographers-in-training.

Silvergifting Week 2025
Silvergifting Week is a Tumblr event dedicated to Celebrimbor/Mairon | Annatar | Sauron pairing, aka Silvergifting. This year, it will run from August 4-10.
Day 1 (August 4): First meetings
Either a canon version, or your wildest AU take. What happens next?
Day 2 (August 5): Romance
Them. In a relationship. As spicy or soft as you want them to be. Enjoy!
Day 3 (August 6): Tension
Emotional stress or conflict in their relationship. Perhaps it is mutual pining, or growing suspicion? Or perhaps they are rivals? You decide.
Day 4 (August 7): Threesomes
Them - and someone else. This prompt can be used either for romantic or gen relationships.
Day 5 (August 8): Hurt/comfort and angst
Silvergifting week would not be complete without a healthy dose of hurt/comfort and angst. Comfort is optional.
Day 6 (August 9): Rings of Power
Today's prompt can be used in two ways. It is either the Rings itself, or Silvergifting inspired by the RoP television series.
Day 7 (August 10): Second chances
They deserve that, don't they? Post-canon, new beginnings.
These prompts are totally optional, they are just for inspiration. Late entries are always welcome.
This year, we don't have a separate Alternative Universe | Canon divergence day. You can post AU content for any prompt.
Silvergifting week started as a Silmarillion fandom event, but the event also welcomes fanworks inspired by the Rings of Power television series. Those can be posted for every prompt, but day 6 is a special day in celebration for the tv series. The entries will be tagged #trop for those who want to curate their experience.
Nargothrond Week 2025
This week will be dedicated to celebrating the realm of Nargothrond, her kings, rulers and people from various eras, from the starting point and blooming bud of the idea in Felagund's mind, to her devastating destruction by the dragon Glaurung. Nargothrond Week will run from August 1-6, 2025 on Tumblr.

- Please be kind to each participant and how they have decided to express their ideas. Bullying will not be tolerated.
- There is no limit in how you have decided to participate in this week! Drawings, writings, Headcanon posts, moodboards, cosplays, etc… are all part of this challenge. Let your heart and mind lead you!

Nargothrond was a rich kingdom, and home to the most generous and perhaps the most vain of Finwe's grandchildren. Tell your piece of the glorious balls and the dramas they often followed with
Day 4 (August 4th): The Unlikely Bonds
We all know of the Nargothrond trio and their famous frenemy relathionship, but Nargothrond doesn't end with them. Many named or unnamed characters resided in Finrod's golden halls, but we seldom get to hear or see much of they were up to. This day can be about celebrating these relathionships (be them platonic or romantic)
Day 5 (August 5th): Those Bloody Fangs
Be it Huan the great hound to Sauron and his wolves, and to the dragon which brought this land to ruins, Nargothrond's fate was decided by beast and their fangs stained with blood of innocents and sinners alike
Day 6 (August 6th): Oaths and Curses
From Feanor's bloody Oath, to Finrod and his heroic and honorable promise, to Turin and his dak curse, this kingdom was set to be led by words of power
Day 7 (August 7th): In Irmo's Domain
Works revolving around dreams, be they telling stories of future and of foresight nature, or of the dark kinds which keeps our dear elves up at night, caused by hardship and pain

Innumerable Stars is a Tolkien fandom gift exchange for all works by Tolkien or associated with Middle-earth.
People Who Participate in Innumerable Stars are:
★ Interested in and excited about multiple Tolkien-based canons.
☆ Interested in their fellow fans’ creativity in fanfiction and fanart, and excited to explore their own.
★ Open to creating and receiving any one of a number of different prompts or ideas.
☆ Happy to read and comment on the fanwork(s) they receive with thanks first of all, but also to read and comment on other fanworks in the exchange.
People Who Participate in Innumerable Stars will:
★ Generally read and create for a variety of slash, gen, het, adventures, fluff, dark, erotica, worldbuilding, etc.
☆ Create their fanwork following their recipient’s prompts in good faith, and receive the fanwork(s) that have been given to them in good faith also.
★ Also write or draw “treats” for others in the exchange, if their own time and inspiration permits after they have completed their assignment,. These are not required but they add to the fun and excitement of the exchange!
☆ Create their fanwork without the use of AI, be it in writing or art.
What Innumerable Stars is NOT:
You do not have to be open to or interested in every type of fanwork to participate. However, Innumerable Stars is not for anyone interested in just one character, pairing, or scenario. Nor is it for people who find stories or art containing material they are not interested in offensive because it exists. If either of these apply, we wish you well, but this is not the exchange for you.
