This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. This is a very interesting way of handling that particular decision: the idea that Maedhros had been rehearsing it to himself for a long time and then chose to do it in such a way. There is an intriguing mixture of formal and informal elements in the interaction between the two cousins here...
I really enjoyed this look at Caranthir, who I barely remember from the Silm. You've established a believable voice and character here; he reminds me a bit of Eol, but not as sinister or bitter.
I was confused by the use of the name Celegorm in the last two paragraphs - did you mean Celegorm or Caranthir?
