I don't believe Celebrimbor was capable of placing himself completely beyond either loyalty or betrayal. Not sure which was the right thing to do at Nargothrond, however. The problem with choices in epic tales is one is usually screwed whichever choice one makes. Annatar just happened to be there in the right place at the right time. One could say that lack of interest in Annatar's gifts would have made one safe. But that would be a rotten backward-looking way to live also.
