This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

In the back of the battalion was no good place to be. The officers used whips to keep them moving. But he hadn’t managed to win the scramble for place when they last formed up, so he was stuck for it. He wondered if the thrice-damned fire-eyed elves had to be whipped into place – or if their commanders spurred them on with cheerful proclamations like ‘no victory, no return!’ Not much of a motivation, really. He had little desire to return to caverns and the endless preparations for war. Win or lose, there had to be something better than this.
