Frodo spent his last summer in the Shire much as he had the one before he’d gone on his journey—visiting old haunts, taking in favorite views, wandering down old walking trails. It was not the same, of course. Sam had done his work well and the whole Shire was flourishing again, but he missed the old groves of beloved and familiar trees, and the old houses and hobbit holes that had since been re-dug and rebuilt. In time they would all grow and settle in and appear as established as the hills—but Frodo would not be there to see.
He had one more long journey ahead of him. Sam and Merry and Pippin joked about his retiring to Rivendell like old Bilbo, and promised they would visit him. Frodo didn’t have the heart to tell them that, this time, he really would have to go without them.
