The scream had turned to whimpers, sharp pains into bitter aches, for even a Vala with might such as he could be brought low by the cunning of the mistress of spiders. Mairon cradled the hands of his master, blackened, cracked, and weeping from the intensity of the light-filled gems he had brought to Beleriand. Lammoth echoed around them, the mountains high in the distance. Mairon did his best, bathing the burns in winter’s first smattering of snow, singing the poison out of his master’s blood. But the whispers came into his thought, surely my master is not this weak.
