Since you were pulled from earth, unshaped and grey,
Here mortal man has lost the tale of years,
And none can tell how glorious you stood,
Nor of your fall when came the day of tears.
You shone for all who walked this merry land,
Secure beside your comrades in the keep,
And watched the work of hands that formed your shape,
A witness to a light that did not sleep.
That light and song is gone. But others came,
Bereft of home, to walk the hills and streams,
And find you where you fell, in shattered state,
The proof of tales that lived on but in dreams.
Their barrows needed building. Who in truth
Would pass by such a quarry, ready-made?
They bore away your brethren, course by course,
For fences and for homes now are they laid.
And you yourself are set in honor's place,
As roof to guard the chamber of their graves.
The ashes and the bones of many years,
Their triumphs and defeat-songs now you save.
How long until this new song also fails?
How long until their bones are but decay?
What stone recalls, from waking worlds will fade.
This glory, too, is only for a day.
