The last moments of Fingon

A special thanks to my friend Simona for her help.

Read The last moments of Fingon

When a man has a great name, he must expect to die for it.

-Rukara

With his sword raised high, Fingon thought about facing his final fate. He had to end up in the Halls of Mandos to fight in this endless war, given the epithet by which he had been called, namely Alstaldo, The Valiant in the common language.

Yet, with blood falling copiously into his eyes from a head wound and the nearby warmth of the whip of Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs, he distinctly thought he would rather still be in Valinor in the age of trees.

It had been a happy era. A moment in his life when he had yet to realize how cruel the world could be. Or maybe he knew it perfectly, but deluded himself that the cruelty couldn't really touch him.

The thought lasted nothing more than a few seconds, then he felt a searing pain in his side. It lasted a few seconds. Then nothing.

So ended the first life of Findékano Astaldo, High King of Noldor in Middle-earth.

Yes, being surnamed the Valiant might indeed predestine him to die in battle!

A moving look at his last thoughts.

(I also read the Italian version; having read the English first helped.)

....to get Fingon's last thoughts. I think you are right that they would include the light and innocence of Valinor, as well as the cruelty that came after the Darkening and from there to Beleriand.

What a contrast, to recall his life at peace in Valinor at this moment. And he seems at peace with his death, a minor blessing in all the horror.
