Read My Hands Long for Far Shores

The problem with being king, Ereinion often thought to himself, was that kinging often took him far inland. Which made sense, the majority of the land he stewarded was, well, land, with pale silver trees and golden fields of wheat. But was it too much to ask, too much to hope, that he might settle for a few centuries, that the business of ruling might wait? Was he not a Noldo (perhaps) (or Teleri) (or Sindar) (or something), with a craft to occupy his hands? He had been taught at his (foster) father’s knee to make ships (what craft did his true father ply?) to heal his sick and tired soul in the gentle curve of a strong keel, in the strength of endless miles of rope and rigging, in the wind caught in sails that never failed.

He wanted to sail.

He stayed for the people.

The sea called to him endlessly.

Perhaps he would have made it to Aman one day, if not for war and devastation and Maiar with annoying plans. And rings, because it always comes back to jewelry.

But in the end, it is the flame that takes him, the kingship of the Noldor bracketed neatly by the burning of ships on peaceful harbors. It is his friend who lights his funereal ship, and sidesteps the business of kinging altogether.
