Just as their parents had chosen to which kindred they shall belong, Eönwë informed them, so too they need choose their own fates. However, continued Eönwë, because Eärendil had chosen with Elwing against his true desire, so the twins must each make their own choice without knowledge of the other's. Elros favoured the longevity of his elvish heritage; this Elrond knew well. And though he himself, unable to contemplate an eternity in Arda Marred, would rather escape the bonds of Arda with the Gift of Men, yet for love of his brother he chose to be counted among the Eldar.
Eönwë departed in a flash of light leaving only a faint odour of lightning, whereupon the brothers ran to embrace each other, both exclaiming with joy that they shall never be parted. Elrond pulled away a little, looking at his brother as a sudden hollow, dizzy feeling filled his being.
"What ... did you chose?" Although he knew now what Elros would answer.
"I chose the fate of Men, of course, so we remain always together."
Elrond spun, calling back the Maia, but of Eönwë there was no sign.
(Sorry. It's the Silm; it just seems to want to be worse.)
