Fanwork Notes

Chapter 1 Summary:

Maedhros had given up all hope of escaping from Angband himself. They never leave him lightly guarded when he is hale enough to run. But that doesn’t keep him from plotting to help somebody else.

Lirulin didn’t know what to think when the red-headed thrall unlocked their cell and freed her and her family from their chains. But it gave them the chance to implement their laboriously planned escape attempt. So, they didn't question their luck.

Later, after Lirulin was free, she drew a map of Angband for Fingon. Even though she thought he was crazy. To her joy, she then learned of Fingon’s success.

A/N 1: A warning, this story contains mostly non-graphic details about the torture of thralls in Angband.

A/N 2: I use Sindarin names for the characters, with the exception of Maedhros in this first chapter, because he was likely captured before he had a chance to choose a Sindarin name to use for himself. Lirulin is a Sinda, so she thinks of the characters by their Sindarin names. Also, it was more convenient for me.

Quotes:

"Maedhros was ambushed, and all his company was slain, but he himself was taken alive by the command of Morgoth, and brought to Angband and tortured." - J.R.R. Tolkien (taken from the text of outlines he wrote about the events of Maedhros’ capture and imprisonment, prior to the publication of the 1937 Silmarillion)

“[T]o him that is pitiless the deeds of pity are ever strange and beyond comprehension.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien

Chapter Two Summary:

Lirulin accompanies Amras to visit Maedhros in his sick room. She and Maedhros bond over some of their shared experiences. While Lirulin is there, they are joined by Fingon and Fingolfin. Lirulin then bears witness to Maedhros’ strong friendship with Fingon.

Quotes:

“But when [Feanor’s host] were landed, Maedhros . . . spoke to Feanor, saying: “Now what ships and rowers will you spare to return, and whom shall they bear hither first? Fingon the valiant?"

Then Feanor laughed as one fey, and he cried: "None and none! What I have left behind I count now no loss; needless baggage on the road it has proved. Let those that cursed my name, curse me still, and whine their way back to the cages of the Valar! Let the ships burn!” Then Maedhros alone stood aside, but Feanor caused fire to be set to the white ships of the Teleri.” - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillon

“[In Mithrim] Maedhros in time was healed, though shadow of pain was in his heart; and he lived to wield his sword with his left hand more deadly than his right had been. By this deed Fingon rescued his friend of old from torment, and their love was renewed; and the hatred between the houses of Fingolfin and Fëanor was assuaged.”  — J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillon
