The Day Has Come At Last

Ancalagon crashed into Thangorodrim and the mountain broke, splintering as the earth shook. The walls of the fortress trembled and crumbled; all the assembled armies of Valinor and Beleriand, of Elves and Men and Dwarves and Ainur, stood still, breathless and silent. Overhead the clouds parted and the sun shone, bright beams of golden light falling upon the pits of Angband that now lay open to the sky, and above the wreckage Vingilot hovered, her hull scorched but unharmed and the Silmaril blazing from the prow.

Gil-galad scrambled up some boulders so that he could be seen by all, and Elrond followed, bearing his banner with its field of stars upon a field of deep blue. “Utúlie’n aurë!” Gil-galad cried in a loud voice. “Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie’n aurë!”

All around them a great cry went up. “Auta i lomë! The night is passing! Auta i lomë!”
