ghost story

If he stopped moving for too long, the ghosts caught up. Every time, without fail. He would try to find a place to build a little house, or turn a small dry cave into a proper shelter, and for a time it would be quiet. His only company would be the wind and the rain, or the birds that flitted through the woods or raced the waves over the sands.

Then a night would come when the moon was dark and the stars were dim, and he would open his eyes to see ghosts, old dreams and memories given waking shape that only he could see, given voices only he could hear, and not even his loudest songs could drive them away. It was unbearable, to see their faces without being able to touch them, for they dissolved like mist whenever he tried.

So he stopped trying, and he ran.
