This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

Hurt, delusions, tandem, fly
From the SWG discord instadrabbling session on January 19, 2025. For the words "hurt, delusions, tandem, fly". Elwing's flight.
She had expected hitting the water to hurt, but she dove in like an arrow, the Silmaril a beacon multiplied myriad-fold in ripples and bursts of brightness as she swam toward the seafloor, at first unsure where to go now that she was not dead. Her thoughts had never stretched further than the leap, than Away, do not let them have the jewel!, but she had not had delusions about her survival.
But when her arms itched out feathers in tandem, shifted painlessly into wings and rushed her to the surface, the sky opening, she knew where to fly.
Westward.
