Song for a Heartsick Soul

I long to take myself apart

‘Neath flesh what lies beneath?

Black as mire? Or gold yet hides,

Deep in that secret place?

Once a heart lay singing there

Pure life, and wonder and light

Its sanguine beat I fear has ceased

Ash its sole remains

Yet I prick and burn with shame

Perhaps a small and flick’ring flame

Yet in that secret place remains

And I am not yet all decay.
