The Oath
The flames burned high into the sky. So high they could be seen on the distant shore. So high, the enemy in his fortress could spy them. Fëanor laughed as they climbed.
“None and none! What I have left behind I count now no loss; needless baggage on the road it has proved. Let those that cursed my name, curse me still, and whine their way back to the cages of the Valar! Let the ships burn!”
Nobody heard the screams. Nobody heard the voice that whispered at the end.
***
The flames burned high into the sky. The fingers of flame marked Fëanor’s death, for so fiery was his spirit that as it sped forth, his body fell to ash, and was borne away like smoke.
The Oath renewed weighed heavy on his six remaining sons.
Nobody heard the whispered words before the end. Nobody heard the screams as he burned.
***
The flames burned high into the sky. With them, Doriath fell. Maedhros watched from the forest, his search a lost cause. For a moment something whispered on the wind.
Three brothers were found after the path of the fire. All nothing but char. Only known by of the marks on their swords. Wounds of sword and arrow upon them. It was not clear which had taken them; steel or flame.
The screams alerted Maedhros that he would not find a fourth in the ruins. Amras was found screeching Amrod’s name. Terror had fallen upon him and he was senseless in his grief. Amrod had been lost long ago, yet his twin could not be consoled to this.
***
The flames burned high into the sky and Sirion burned. Again the Silmaril was gone. Again the fires burned.
Maglor searched for Amras in the burnt out remains. The fire had burnt hottest where he found what was left. Wholly unidentifiable. But in the dirt, by his hand was a single word. ‘Amrod’. Even his last thought was of his lost twin.
***
The flames burned high into the sky. Maglor watched in horror. Silhouetted against the sun, at the edge of the volcano, had been someone tall a moment before. The splash of lava and fire told him what happened.
***
The flames burned in his hand, but Maglor refused to let go, when he had lost so much.
For a moment something whispered on the wind and Maglor listened.
This I swear, with my last breath.
Father, and my kin, shall be scorched black as Morgoth’s heart.
All then shall know my fate, lest his Oath be forsworn.
Then Maglor remembered. The hand he imagined on his father’s heart before flame started there. His brothers still screaming as the throne room burned. Amras crying out for Amrod to stop, before his voice cut off.
…The second burning figure that pushed Maedhros over the edge.
He saw it then, the hand on his. The flame and char of a long-dead hand. In despair he cast the Silmaril into the sea.
The flames faded from his hand. Amrod stood there, shifting from fire, to brother, to nothing but a charred ghost. The eyeless holes blinked twice as he faded.
Maglor caught the voice that whispered. “Remember…us.”
He looked down at his ruined hands and felt compelled to sing of all he had lost.
