This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

The Summons Arrives
This chapter takes place in Eglarest, where Alatáriel and Teleporno have lived since they came to the mortal lands.
Alatáriel sighed, refolding the letter and letting it fall to her lap. Teleporno leaned toward her. "What is it?" he asked.
"My uncle is calling a family council," she said. "Like Tirion, Mithrim is growing too small for the House of Míriel and the House of Indis to share."
"Sparks will fly," Teleporno laughed. "It is lucky we are so far from that forge."
"O no," Alatáriel replied, "my big brother will be in the thick of it, and he asks that I come also."
"Then I will go with you. It is time we saw more of this land."
